From Mandy: Great news! Dog Breeding Science has agreed to add the mini puppy test to the list of tests they already offer for kelpies! It will be commercially available before Christmas :-) I just have to collect some samples and send off to them so that they can check they can get the test up and running correctly. This is also the company in Sydney that is offering CA testing. https://breeding.dog/ Some of you will remember from our old group I have posted about little runty kelpie puppies a number of times. Sadly all those old posts and pics are gone now, but hopefully some of you remember them. You may even remember that a couple of years ago I asked if anyone who had bred similar puppies would like to contribute to a research project that Sydney Uni was starting on the mini puppies. I knew of some lines that were getting the minis both in Aus and overseas. I now want to thank those breeders and owners who agreed to contribute to the research by sending in blood or mouth swabs from affected pups. Sadly, some breeders who I spoke to personally to ask them to get involved, as I knew they had produced similar puppies, chose not to. Some even denied ever producing the mini puppies :-( Anyway, the research has now been published https://rdcu.be/b9bKb We now know the mutation responsible - it involves a large deletion of a gene responsible for digestion of long chain fatty acids. So much of what I was seeing is now explained - why they can not digest fat, why they appear to grow out of it once weaned, and interestingly, we have found out about mice with the same mutation and they display all the same characteristics. Sydney Uni has been kind enough to test all my dogs for me so I know who carries it. But I know of lots of other kelpies around the world that must carry it, and who are producing offspring that appear normal, but are still carrying it. I have even imported semen from overseas and it turned out he carried it - not a problem until I put him to one of my girls who also carried it! My next mission is to try and get the test made commercially available along with our DNA profiling, colour panels and DM, CEA testing etc. Hopefully one of the commercial companies will see it as a worthwhile test to offer for kelpie breeders More info: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577358753173972/?ref=share
